Animals Deserve Better -- Thursday January 8th, 2015

Animals Deserve Better Treatment Than This by Jan Blaustone (Tennessean Opinion Piece) I can't be more disgraced to begin 2015 as a Tennessean. Not one animal cruelty bill was passed last year. Not entirely our lawmakers' fault as we voted them into office. Do you remember repeated news stories about "Angel Farms," whose horses died or were in agony, crash after crash on I-40 in West Nashville on their journey to a Mexican slaughterhouse? What about all of the stories of dog fighting, cockfighting, "dog breeders," "dog trainers" and more? Visit your local nonprofit animal rescue like Proverbs 12:10 in Bellevue to learn story after story of the 800 or so animals they rescue, vet and save year after year with no government funding. Proverbs is just one example of voluntary community service in Tennessee. They could use some help from our elected officials to continue their work. How about legal protection to lighten the load? Dr. Raefsky, 59, of Hermitage died August 5, 2014. Eric was born in Philadelphia, PA to the late, Leonard and Eleanor Potash Raefsky. Dr. Raefsky was a man of many accomplishments, but none greater than his life of service, compassion and love of others. Eric graduated from M.I.T., where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, and went on to graduate first in his class at Temple University School of Medicine. He performed his internship and a fellowship at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, followed by a fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Raefsky was board certified in Hematology and Medical Oncology and was a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Lymphoma Society. He was a physician at Tennessee Oncology, PLLC for 25 years, serving on the Board of Directors, and most recently, as Medical Director. Among his many honors are the Frist Humanitarian Award and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Man of the Year. Eric gave generously of his time and expertise to many organizations in Nashville and beyond. This incredible soul touched countless people throughout his support for the arts, animal rescue and young people in their pursuit of higher education. Eric loved world travel, dogs, the Phillies, Predators Hockey and the Grateful Dead. Our hearts are broken but we have so much to celebrate - all of us whose lives were saved by his medical skill and changed by his love. So long and farewell, sweet friend of ours, until we meet again. Dr. Raefsky was married for 31 years to his best friend and lifelong love, Victoria “Tori” Heil. He is also survived by his sister, Cindy (Howard) Estrin; nephews, Matthew and Scott Estrin; the beloved Raefsky/Yates family; his much-loved “daughter”, Stacy (James) Maciuk; “grandchildren”, Savannah and Mia Maciuk; the entire Heil family; his many four-legged furry friends, the Big Chill Gang and the BFDDs.

Thieves Steal From Animal Rescue Group -- Saturday July 26th, 2014

By Jenny White. CREATED Jul 27, 2014 MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A car burglary in broad daylight shocked members of a middle Tennessee animal rescue group, and now that burglary is forcing them to operate without some much needed equipment. Members of the Proverbs 12:10 Rescue Group say they parked a van at the Bellevue Staples parking lot Saturday morning, and they returned to find the car broken into. Their laptop and Wi-Fi connecter, worth $1,000 was taken. The group says it uses the laptop to keep track of pet adoptions it helps facilitate. The group says it would rather spend time helping dogs find new homes than trying to shop for a new Wi-Fi connector and laptop. “Both of those are very helpful to us on adoption day, so to steal from a non-profit is just a double insult,” said Lavonne Redferrin. The thieves had also taken a toolbox filled with heartworm medication, but it was found dumped very close to where their van was parked in the Bellevue Staples parking lot.
